A native New-Brunswicker, Sylvie Adams has lived mostly in Montreal. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Concordia University and a Master’s Degree in Applied Sciences (Architecture) from Université de Montréal.
Based on a process that leaves room for serendipity, her practice gives an outcome that is far from determined. The work becomes the result of a dialogue between the canvas and the artist, where the elementary forces of gravity and time are as active as the mark left by the gesture. Thus, voluntary mark-making mingles with fortuitous traces, with Adams deciding whether or not to control these traces as they become an integral part of the work. Once the initial composition is suggested by the work, the intention becomes clearer and is finalized using free marks and coloured masses.
Her work has been featured in several solo exhibitions both in private and public galleries. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, nationally and internationally, in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Asia. Her work has been shown at prestigious International Contemporary Art Fairs on three continents, including "Context", "Art Wynwood", and "Art New-York". Her work can also be found in private and corporate collections, including the collection of the multinational corporation Rio Tinto Alcan.
